How to Prepare for and Survive an E-mail Disaster with InstantReplay™
From its humble beginnings, e-mail has evolved into a mission critical corporate communications tool. This fact hit home late
last week when Blackberry customers experienced delays and service interruptions with their popular mobile e-mail devices.
While it garnered most of the press, RIM wasn't the only e-mail vendor to experience problems last week. Flying under most
radar screens were service issues including lengthy e-mail delays at two major hosted antispam providers.
XPMsoftware has been working on a product to provide additional protection in the event of any e-mail service outage.
InstantReplay™ is a PerfectMail add on product designed to ensure you don't miss a single message even if your mail server
fails.

A Sobering Perspective on Spam
Unlike most people, my entire day is spent focused on spam. When I chat with prospects,
I hear about the pain they experience trying to run a business without spam protection,
or the pain caused by using a bad spam filter. New customer success stories are always
a high point in my day. And, I regularly talk with long time customers who call in to
offer suggestions or ask questions.
When I think of the cost of spam, I think primarily of lost productivity
and wasted resources, or business risks such as viruses.
Or, I think of identity theft through Phishing or websites run by
criminals (the kind who sell your credit card information after you place an order).
My view of spam changed permanently when I read a story in the
National Post
about a woman who purchased pills from a 'Canadian Pharmacy'...

Rise of the Virtual Machine
What do you do when you have too many physical servers to fit in your server room but not enough
servers to run all of your workloads? You virtualize.
Server virtualization, the IT trend for 2006 and beyond, has developed momentum based on its promise of
better hardware utilization, lower capital and support costs, rapid deployment of new workloads and
zero down time server administration. Server virtualization also creates new options for Disaster
Recovery, provides better application availability (uptime) and, for the first time, gives PC server
administrators the ability to proactively plan for and manage growth.
Are Virtual Appliances on your radar screen?

The Evolution of Image Spam
Image spam, Picture spam and even Ransom spam... These are all names used to describe a current and highly
effective trend in spamming... putting the message into a picture and including it as an embedded image.
Regardless of its name, Image spam is a problem because it gets past traditional antispam defenses.
Do you recognize any of these images?

Its 6pm, Time for Your Daily Dose of Spam!
Anyone who has received telemarketing calls at dinner time knows just how annoying
these intrusions can be. One solution is to ask the caller to add your number to the
call center's permanent do not call list. But, don't be surprised if telemarketer
feigns ignorance of laws requiring them honor such requests.
Spammers are not troubled by such legal impediments. It is simply too easy for a spammer
to acquire everything needed to promote their schemes (scams?) outside of the
recipients' legal jurisdiction. Even if the sender is in the same jurisdiction, law
enforcement is so under-funded and under-resourced that the successful prosecution of a
spammer is still a newsworthy event.

Why Is There Spam?
Years ago, Bill Cosby released a hilarious album entitled Why is There Air?
Part of the humor in the album is that the title question was never answered.
Unfortunately, there is nothing funny about Spam. We have all experienced the frustration of
having to clear out dozens (or perhaps hundreds) of unwanted e-mail messages each morning.
Our research at
XPMsoftware shows that
unwanted and malicious e-mail makes up more than 75% of all e-mail activity,
and the majority of unwanted e-mails are marketing oriented. Marketing is a numbers game...
advertisers are interested in getting their message out to as many people as
possible.
